Firstly, Bruce did not utilize any critical thinking skills as it pertains to understanding how the brain stores information. He was not creative and constructive in his ability to derive an alternative explanation for why he cannot retain the information other than a problem with the test itself. Moreover, he wasn’t willing to think and assess his claims to make objective judgments on the basis of well supported reasons and evidence. Rather, Bruce focused on an emotional anecdote. For instance, did Bruce ask his self whether there were other persons who aced the test? If these persons aced the test was there really something wrong with the test or him? If he had asked these critical questions and realized that others person had done better than him it would lead him to further investigate how people retain information. While investigating how people retain information Bruce would have realized that the maintenance rehearsal or rote memorization that he engaged in wasn’t the best technique to retain the information in the long term memory. Lastly, Bruce had a misconception that reading information over and over would create a lasting memory. This assumption and belief kept him from considering the evidence fairly and so his reasoning was bias. Therefore, his misconception and lack of asking questions prevented him from understanding that to retain information one has to engage in effortful encoding...
